History of TAC
1934
Greatest Air Race

The concept for this challenge was inspired by the 1934 'Greatest Air Race' from London to Melbourne, where pioneering aviators demonstrated the feasibility of long-distance commercial flights.

2021
KLM's Bold Moves

The Aviation Challenge was the brainchild of a group of KLM employees called the Bold Moves who, in a quest for ambitious new ways to make flying more sustainable

2022
Launch of TAC

16 airlines participated with 22 flights. SkyTeam only. Focus on reducing CO2 emissions and generation of shared innovative solutions

2023
Expansion of TAC

22 global airlines participated with 72 flights Included additional 'friends and family' airlines Airlines collectively 20% better than the industry (excluding the effect of SAF)

2024
Adoption of TAC

In TSFC 2024, we will measure and award progress rather than efforts on a single flight Inviting airlines outside of SkyTeam (non-alliance) Focus on progress and adoption to accelerate sustainable aviation

2025
Impact

The Impact theme focuses on the tangible and measurable outcomes of environmental sustainability initiatives and solutions within the industry. It highlights achievements in reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and managing waste effectively.

Previous Editions of TAC
The third and largest edition of TAC to-date brought together 24 participating airlines, including two airlines from outside the SkyTeam alliance for the first time ever. These airlines operated a combined 33 showcase flights to test and demonstrate innovative solutions that help enable sustainability progress.
More airlines, more flights, more innovations to help make flying greener. The TAC 2023 challenge was scheduled between 15 May – 28 May 2023 in which 22 participating airlines implemented their most sustainable solutions and competed for awards in 31 categories.
The Aviation Challenge 2022 focused both on the impact and contribution solutions. This year’s challenge delivered notable CO₂ reductions through operational improvements, advanced aircraft, and sustainable fuel. CO₂ intensity was 15% lower than our own baselines and 32.7% below the industry average, with 64% of flights using next-generation aircraft. Despite a 20.6% increase in RTK production, total CO₂ emissions per flight dropped by 4.4%. These results highlight our commitment to more efficient, sustainable air travel, setting the stage for continued progress in future editions.
